Making Extra Money

 in Australia

Casual jobs in Australia are not very difficult to get. Depending on the time of year, and how good your skills and English are, you can find a job very fast in Australia. Most of these jobs pay around A$14.50 per hour or more depending on your previous experience in the area. Courses and certificates you have will also help to decide if you are the right person for that job. Casual work in Australia is the biggest sector of the economy, and full time ones, are slowly disappearing. Unemployment in Australia in January 2004 was the lowest it has been for the past 30 years.

Buying and selling things is another option to get extra money in Australia, working at markets on the weekends. These markets often need people to cover up or attend a stall, selling a huge variety of goods. If you know how to do something, like arts & crafts, you may be able to get good money selling your goods in these markets. A trestle table costs about A$50 and the participation in the market from A$ 20 to A$ 80 depending on the type of market.

Auctions are another way to save or make some bucks in Australia. They happen once or twice a week in most big cities, and you can get all sort of goods for yourself, or sell them later for a profit. You can check when auctions are going on in the Saturday newspapers. They work like this...

  • The day before is the inspection day. That means you can check, turn on, try, make it work, etc to make sure the goods are in working order. (electronics can be very tricky- Watch out)

  • The day of the Auction, you bring your ID to the reception and get a card with a number on it. When the Auctions starts, the Auctioneer, stands in front of the goods and points to them; he gives the first price. If interested you just make a signal.

  • Depending on the number of interested people, the price goes up or down. Once nobody else is accepting the new price, the Auctioneer hits the pen on his paper and says Sold. If you were the last to bid, he will ask for the number you have on your card. You have until the next day to pay for the goods, and you can buy as many as you want. (And can afford!)

Some Examples: Micro Wave oven (as new) A$ 35 Freezer (Frost free 300 let) A$ 150 - Brand New Surfboard A$ 250. Bicycle in very good condition A$ 45 - Gold Ring A$ 150. Leather Sofa (3 persons) A$ 350. Tool box with tools A$ 8.

Garage Sale - Are also very popular in Australia, and some products bought at an Auction can make some extra bucks for you at a garage sale. Depending on the laws of the council or state you are in, you can make up to 3 garages sales per year.
