Together with New
Zealand, Australia is considered one of the best countries in the world to travel by car. Tourists will find every expected facility, and everything is simple and functional. This simplicity is part of long planning by the Australian Government, and complemented by Australians who are proud of their country and eager to show off where they live. Because of that, tourists feel relaxed and welcome, treated with respect and friendship, typical of the Australians. In every part of Australia, the people are helpful when giving information and directions about places to go. The result is a most enjoyable trip.
Travelling by Road - Australia is big; the 6th biggest country in the world in size, and there are huge distances between cities. Depending on how far you want to go, it will take time and planning to get there. Paved roads are very good and safe, well signed and not crowded, making driving easy and pleasant. To be adventurous on unsealed roads, we recommend that you find about the conditions before you leave. Remember to have a break on long journeys, at one of the many rest areas. Tiredness is one of the biggest causes of road accidents in Australia. There are plenty of car rental companies in every tourist city as well as motor homes and self contained campervans with everything you need to have great fun. Also, buses and trains are another very popular way to travel Australia. If you are not experienced in driving on the left side of the road, practicing with a Driving School first might be a good
idea.Travelling by Air - Because of the recent "war" between airlines in Australia, it became a piece of cake to travel Australia by air. www.virginblue.com.au and www.jetstar.com.au are offering ridiculous prices to travel inside Australia (sometimes cheaper than the fuel for the car).
Accommodation
is not a problem
because there are literally thousands of different
kinds on offer for all types of budget. From A$ 9
per person per night on a Camping ground or Caravan
Park, to A$ 15 or 20 in a Backpacker hostel; A$ 50
in a motel or even A$1000 in some resorts and
hotels. Most big cities have no accommodation
problems, but some small towns may have problems
during the holiday periods. Booking in advance is
recommended.
It is
better to ask the
locals about dangers you may encounter where you are
staying. North-Eastern and Northern Australia have
dangerous animals such as salt water crocodiles
inhabiting their rivers, creeks and the sea. Box
Jellyfish are another dangerous in season. If you
want to know more about it, visit our page about
Dangerous Animals. Big Cities are safe, despite the
fact a lot more care should be taken with your
possessions. However, big cities in Australia are
really well policed and most of the problems are
caused by alcohol intake. Even a woman travelling
alone is pretty safe. Just don't accept rides from
someone you don't know. Yes, you can have your
camera hanging around your neck - it is going to be
almost impossible for someone steal it from you!.
